Ikea is experimenting with a parking for dogs in its Cologne (Germany) shop
In spite of allowing dogs in its shops, just like requested by a lot of customers, Ikea started an experiment, that depending on the result, may also cover shops in other cities. We are talking about opening a parking for dogs. That’s to say, a place where to park your dog with his leash while you are in the shop. Each parking space has its own bowl with water and is far enough from the surrounding parking places to avoid fights.
The idea seems likable and aims, in one hand, prevent people from leaving their dogs locked in cars and, in the other hand, silence the request from those customers that live with dogs and are obsessed with taking them everywhere.
Beyond the marketing trick, Ikea’s solution seems that may cause more problems than solutions. Because it’s not the same to leave your dog for 5 minutes by the bakery’s door in any quiet town as it is to leave him for hours in a big shopping mall where there are lots of people.
What may happen if I leave my dog by Ikea’s door for hours? He may be stolen, he may escape if a hooligan unleashes him or if he is artful enough to unleash himself, he may have a nervous breakdown… Who is able to keep calm for hours while his dog is by Ikea’s door? Not me, certainly. Well, it’s ok if you leave your dog alone at home for a while. I advise you to take a walk or run with him before going shopping and that’s all, your dog will be happy on the couch.
And I would tell Ikea not to do things halfway, to relax and allow dogs in its shops, it’s not the end of the world. [iwwd]
